Driving in Andalucía is one of the best ways to experience the region. With excellent highways, stunning mountain routes, historic towns, white villages, natural parks, and coastal roads, Andalucía is built for road trips. Whether you’re visiting for a holiday or living here full-time, knowing the rules, tolls, and driving customs will make your journey safer and more enjoyable.
Andalucía has an extensive and modern road network, divided into three main types.
1. Autovías (A-xx) – Free Motorways
Examples: A-7 (Costa del Sol), A-45 (Málaga–Córdoba)
Dual carriageway
No tolls
High capacity, fast travel
Most intercity routes in Andalucía use autovías
These are Spain’s equivalent to “freeways” or “dual carriageways”.
2. Autopistas (AP-xx) – Toll Motorways
Many tolls in Andalucía have been removed in recent years, but some remain, primarily in Cádiz and Málaga direction.
Examples:
AP-4 Sevilla ↔ Cádiz (now toll-free)
AP-7 Various sections on Costa del Sol (some toll-free, others paid)
AP-46 Málaga → Las Pedrizas (toll)
AP-41 Córdoba–Madrid (toll, rarely used)
Tolls vary depending on season and time of day (€3–€15 per section).
3. Secondary Roads (A-xxx / MA-xxx / CA-xxx)
These include rural roads, mountain passes and the famous scenic routes to:
Ronda
Las Alpujarras
Grazalema
Sierra Nevada
Axarquía villages
Cabo de Gata
These roads are beautiful but require slower driving and attention.
